An example would be the localised 'plumbers in Edinburgh' rather than the generic 'plumbers' which would show results from all over the world.
The importance of local search is illustrated by the fact that between 30% and 60% of searches for services include a locality, depending on service type. Having spotted this emerging trend we started collecting information on local search in 2001 and commenced development of the technology in 2003.
